From the shore in Kittery Point – Wood Island appears to have not only a Life Saving Station building but also a lighthouse. In fact there are two small islands near each other at the entrance to the Piscatequa River with one building for each island; Wood Island and Whaleback Ledge.
The Whaleback Light is owned by a different non-profit, The Friends of Portsmouth Harbor Lights, and it too is being restored and plans to open to the public.
