Helping Others Then & Now
HELPING OTHERS, THEN AND NOW
The bravery of the surfmen one hundred years ago manning row boats in storms to help mariners in distress is not something we just want to talk about in the museum; we also want to celebrate that tradition in the current day and are looking for ways to do that. We call this Helping Others, Then and Now. By donating tours of Wood Island to charity auctions, Wood Island Life Saving Station Association (WILSSA) has raised tens of thousands of dollars for other non-profits.
The restored historic lifesaving station is now open to the public. It is exceptional because there are only a dozen lifesaving stations available to the public nationally. WILSSA’s goal is that this landmark will inspire others to cherish and conserve the many other historic properties that are in jeopardy and in need of a helping hand. Wood Island has already begun to help bring our community closer together and is working hard to continue to grow that wonderful outcome.
Supporting WILSSA through visits, purchases of merchandise, attending events, and booking overnight stays directly contributes to covering our ongoing expenses. Your admission fees and purchases help maintain the museum’s operations, preserving the collection and facilities for future enjoyment. By participating in events hosted by the museum, you not only enrich your own experiences but also support its financial sustainability. Every contribution plays a crucial role in sustaining the museum’s vitality and cultural significance.
